How to Make CBD Coffee

For many of us, kickstarting the morning with a steaming cup of coffee is non-negotiable. This treasured daily ritual provides a caffeine injection that makes the insurmountable – well, surmountable. What’s less welcome, however, are the side effects that can accompany your morning brew.

Infusing your coffee with CBD, however, can change all that. CBD coffee allows you to enjoy the alertness that caffeine brings while reducing the coffee jitters and heart palpitations that sometimes detract from its effects. Though it sounds counter-intuitive, the calming, grounding properties of CBD bring balance to the energizing, uplifting qualities of coffee.

Best of all? You don’t need to frequent your local coffee shop for a CBD-infused coffee experience–you can brew it at home with High Falls Hemp CBD Oil.

Coffee lovers, get ready for the CBD revolution!

Benefits of Adding CBD to Your Coffee

The combination of CBD and coffee offers a surprising array of benefits. While there are no studies that specifically detail the advantages of blending CBD with coffee, there is abundant data outlining the benefits of caffeine. Caffeine is known to stimulate brain function, elevate mood, and improve physical performance. It also boasts anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity. This psychoactive molecule helps to engender alertness by blocking adenosine receptors in the brain, which in turn promotes wakefulness.

Similarly, there’s also growing evidence that CBD has a host of its own potential benefits. Some of the documented benefits of CBD include its ability to interact with the endocannabinoid system to ease anxiety, manage insomnia, soothe chronic pain, and reduce the cravings associated with addiction.

Anecdotally, those who team coffee and CBD often observe yet another range of advantages.

On one recent Reddit forum discussing CBD and caffeine, participants provided insights such as: “Feels like an Adderall with no adverse effects,” or “CBD and caffeine go together like peanut butter and jelly! I drink a cup of CBD-infused coffee a few times per week, and it definitely makes a difference. Sometimes coffee makes me feel sick to my stomach, but I never feel that way with CBD coffee.”

Some of the most common health benefits of CBD coffee include:

  • Enhanced focus and concentration

  • Boosted mood

  • Reduced shakiness/jitteriness from caffeine

  • Greater alertness

  • Feelings of calmness and relaxation

  • Getting in the “zone” before a workout

  • Improved mental performance

  • Enhanced sleep at night

  • Improved pain relief

  • Reduced nausea (coffee on an empty stomach can feel gnarly!)

Three Ways to Make CBD Coffee

So, now that we’ve established that CBD makes for an excellent addition to your coffee, it’s time to talk technique. How is CBD coffee made? Are some methods better than others? CBD works most effectively with iced coffee, as heat can run the risk of evaporating CBD molecules. However, for any of you who just have to have your cup of joe served warm, have no fear, the average temperature of coffee is not hot enough to cause a large change in potency.

Here’s the High Falls Hemp take on the three different ways to brew CBD coffee.

Adding CBD drops directly to coffee

One of the quickest and easiest ways to make CBD-infused coffee is to simply add drops of the cannabinoid to your brew. For this technique, simply make a cup of coffee to your taste, stirring in your preferred milk and any sweeteners. Once the cup of coffee is prepared, you’re ready to add some CBD drops.

Once you’ve added the CBD, stir the mixture well with a spoon. High Falls Hemp CBD tinctures are formulated to be either taken on their own or blended with a beverage. Plus, they’re available in different formulations such as Mobility and Calm, so you can charge your coffee with the therapeutic properties you require.

Adding CBD oil to ground coffee

If you’re a coffee (or CBD!) connoisseur, you might like to go that extra mile to infuse your morning coffee with CBD as it brews. Those who follow this method of making CBD coffee believe that adding the CBD oil to the ground coffee beans, then allowing both to brew together, makes for a more cohesive experience that better activates the CBD.

To try this technique yourself, simply take some fresh coffee beans, grind them, then add them to a cafetiere (also known as a French press). Add some hot water and your desired quantity of High Falls Hemp CBD Oil.

Our CBD tincture range is made with a hemp seed oil base rather than an MCT oil, which is perfect for adding to ground coffee. Natural oils help to increase the bioavailability of CBD, which is lipophilic (meaning it dissolves in fat). When CBD is consumed with oil, it dissolves more effectively, which in turn means the body can absorb the cannabinoid into the bloodstream more quickly.

Allow the ground coffee to combine with the CBD oil for a minute or so, then pour when ready. Add extras like dairy or plant-based milks if you prefer. It’s worth tasting the brew first, however, so you can appreciate the unique flavor of your freshly brewed CBD latte!

Cold brew CBD coffee

Cold brew coffee represents yet another alternative for brewing CBD coffee. Cold brew is created by steeping coffee grounds in room-temperature water for 12-18 hours–or in some cases, even longer. The grounds are then strained out, and the resulting brew is chilled before being served over ice or diluted with milk or water. The mixture tastes smoother and milder than regular coffee because it’s less acidic.

CBD, like many cannabinoids, can be degraded or evaporated by prolonged high temperatures. Since cold brew coffee is formulated without hot water, there’s no risk of damaging the CBD molecules with excessive heat. Making cold brew CBD coffee is also super simple. Prepare your cold brew, then simply add High Falls Hemp CBD Tincture to the brew, stir it well, and drink it. Voila!

How Much CBD Should I Add to My Coffee?

When it comes to dosing cannabinoids, it’s a good idea to adhere to the old adage “start low and go slow”. Starting out with a low dose allows you to observe the effects and see how your body responds.

For a CBD-infused coffee drink, a low dose to begin with would be 10-15 milligrams. Once you’ve tried this baseline dose, you can increase in 5-10 milligram increments, testing until you find a dose that’s ideal for your needs.

The other thing that’s vital to remember is that CBD-infused coffee works most effectively when the caffeine is in balance with the CBD dosage. Too much CBD, and it may overpower the caffeine, making you feel overly zen or even sleepy.

As a note of caution, once CBD starts to break down, the change happens exponentially. This means that you should not add more CBD to up the dosage in an attempt to counteract the degradation.

Iced CBD Coffee Recipe

Iced coffee represents another way to enjoy CBD-infused coffee without heat. During the dog days of summer in the United States, there’s nothing more refreshing than an icy, creamy coffee hit to kickstart your day.

Here’s our take on an iced CBD coffee:

  • A small handful of ice cubes

  • An espresso made using the French press (or if you’re in a hurry, two tablespoons of instant coffee dissolved in hot water will suffice)

  • 150 mls of your favorite plant-based milk (coconut milk tastes extra creamy)

  • 2 tablespoons of maple syrup, vanilla syrup, or coconut sugar

  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil (this further enhances the bioavailability of the CBD)

  • 10-15 milligrams of High Falls Hemp CBD Tincture.

  • Optional toppings: grated dark chocolate or cinnamon, or whatever is your personal preference.

  1. Place all ingredients (except for the toppings) in the blender, and pulse until fully blended and creamy.

  2. Pour into a cup and dress with your desired topping. Enjoy your cannabis coffee!

The High Falls Hemp Difference

If creating your own CBD-infused coffee sounds appealing, it’s vital to remember that your brew will only be as beneficial as the quality of ingredients you use–particularly when it comes to CBD products.

High Falls Hemp CBD Tinctures are the perfect complement to your coffee. Our extensive tincture range includes full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD formulations made from Cannabis sativa hemp plants, so you have the option of harnessing the benefits of THC or skipping it out, if you choose. Our tinctures are also designed to target specific therapeutic purposes–the Mobility Tincture, for example, helps accelerate recovery from muscle and joint pain, swelling and discomfort. Arnica is also included in this blend, offering additional anti-inflammatory benefits.

Our Calm Tincture, on the other hand, helps harness properties such as calming effects, taking the edge off after a tough day. The tincture is further enhanced with the addition of lavender, known for its anxiety-relieving properties.

If you’re keen to infuse your CBD coffee with a different kind of hemp extract, try our CBD Terpene Tincture. Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in the cannabis plant that offer unique therapeutic properties. Terpenes can help with stress relief, elevating mood and easing anxiety, to name just a few of their varied benefits.

The last thing is to ensure you receive a doctor’s advice before regularly drinking CBD coffee. CBD can act on certain CYP enzyme pathways in the liver, which means it can interact with certain medicines.
